Surprise win at the Trofeo Binda; US rider, Coryn Rivera wins – Italian champion, Elena Cecchini is fifth

Surprise final result at the 19th edition of the Trofeo Alfredo Binda that took place today between Taino and Cittiglio, with 147 athletes at the starting line, representing 25 teams from all over the world. The race was won by American cyclist, Coryn Rivera who beat Arlenis Sierra (Astana Women’s Team) in the final sprint, while third place went to Cecile Uttrup Ludwig. The race concluded with a sprint involving a large group of athletes; the race has never ended with such a large number of athletes. The sprint was so uncertain that two athletes raised their arms at the finish line. American rider, Rivera whose past involves sports as varied as soccer and mountain biking, was delighted with her victory.

Twenty-five year old Rivera is not unknown in the cycling world; she has won many national titles in her career, both on the track and in cyclo-cross, as well as numerous road races. Delighted with the day, the president of the organising committee, Mario Minervino commented: “Everything went wonderfully with two impressive podiums. Lots of people turned out along the route and at the finish line; it was a fantastic festival for cycling and for the region. Today we experimented with lots of forms of communication, from live streaming to web radio and we activated lots of social channels; the response was enthusiastic. I would like to thank RAI, an important partner, to whom I am grateful for everything they do to support female cycling in general and our race in particular. Thanks to the institutions, to all the Municipalities involved in the race and to the sponsors, invaluable friends of amazing sporting adventures”.

Elisa Longo Borghini is still the leader of the Women’s World Tour. Among the young riders, the category leaderis Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig. Longo Borghini explains the surprise result: “The level of female cycling in growing substantially and teams are now able to control the race. Bigla and Sunweb worked for their sprinters and their plan was successful. It is difficult for individuals to emerge”. (Photo Flaviano Ossola)

Sunday in Cittiglio, it’s Italy against the rest of the world

Sunday in Cittiglio, it’s Italy against the rest of the world

ENGLISH VERSION – Sunday in Cittiglio, it’s Italy against the rest of the world

At the Trofeo Alfredo Binda it’s everyone against Elisa Longo Borghini, the fittest athlete of the moment. Among the junior riders, three Italians are aiming for the top: Consonni, Paternoster and Fidanza. But French cyclist Copponi is hoping for her second win. It’s Italy against the rest of the world in both races tomorrow, Sunday 19 March in Cittiglio (Varese). In both the Trofeo Alfredo Binda for elite women and the Trofeo Da Moreno for junior women, the Italian athletes are among the favourites. In the 19th “Trofeo Alfredo Binda – Comune di Cittiglio”, UCI Women’s WorldTour race, ELISA LONGO BORGHINI is the athlete to beat. She is undoubtedly the fittest rider of the moment. Since the start of the season she has come fifth and fourth and she won “Le Strade Bianche”. Here in Cittiglio, she won in the past in difficult weather conditions. That was back in 2013 and that victory gave her sporting career a big push. Tomorrow, she is the absolute favourite. The 25-year old from Ornavasso (Verbania), twice Italian time-trial champion will first of all have to beat English rider, ELIZABETH ARMITSTEAD DEIGNAN, 2015 world champion, who will attempt to win for the third time consecutively in Cittiglio, something that has never been done before. There is curiosity about Dutch rider MARIANNE VOS who has won three times in Cittiglio, but not consecutively. Another rider to keep an eye on is fellow Dutch cyclist, ANNA VAN DER BREGGEN, Olympic champion and winner of many other titles. The race will start at 13.30 in Taino (Varese) and finish in Cittiglio (Varese) at about 16.30 after 131 km.

Tomorrow, junior riders will also feature in the 5th “Trofeo Da Moreno” – Mini-Trofeo A. Binda – a race for junior women that is part of the Nations’ Cup. In this race too, the Italians are favourites; especially CHIARA CONSONNI, LETIZIA PATERNOSTER and MARTINA FIDANZA. Their most dangerous opponent is French rider, CLARA COPPONI, who won last year. The race will start in Taino at 9.00 and finish in Cittiglio at about 11.00 after 69 km. This afternoon the children who took part in the “Cycle, Cycle in Safety” project “fought it out” in a series of events to promote this ancient, but never old, sport that always guarantees strong emotions, even among the very young.

On Sunday 19 March, “Trofeo Alfredo Binda”: third date of the season in the U.C.I. WWT

On Sunday 19 March, “Trofeo Alfredo Binda”: third date of the season in the U.C.I. WWT

A big date in spring cycling in the province of Varese is drawing near. On Sunday 19 March, the 19th Trofeo Alfredo Binda, the true “springtime world championships” of female cycling, will take place between Taino and Cittiglio, together with the 5th Trofeo Da Moreno, opening race of the Junior Women’s Nations’ Cup, which was won last year by Holland, followed by Italy, France, Germany and Norway. So the enthusiasm of the female cycling world and of Cycling Sport Promotion, organisers of the two events, is more than justified. President of CSP, Mario Minervino shares his thoughts: “Ten years have passed since the Trofeo Binda – Comune di Cittiglio became part of the great world of female cycling, thanks to the Municipality of Cittiglio and its Mayor, Fabrizio Anzani. Following the global reforms and the cancellation of the World Cup, the race became part of the Women’s World Tour and is on a par with the men’s professional calendar. There will be lots of noteworthy details in 2017, starting from the 5th “Trofeo Da Moreno” – Mini-Trofeo Binda for junior women. This event was born in Cittiglio and was then launched in other countries that watch our competition with curiosity. Indeed the Unione Ciclistica Internazionale (UCI) used it to create the new Nations’ Cup circuit. The race will begin in Taino and finish in Cittiglio, it is technically challenging and will have an extraordinary impact. The route, through scenic landscapes, will be an advertisement for the territory. We will showcase our countryside, environment, beautiful mountains, lakes, historical towns and villages to a vast audience, promoting our area as the fantastic tourist destination that it is.

Many side events will also be organised and I would like to mention one in particular that is linked to our schools and first and second grade children: the “CYCLE, CYCLE… IN SAFETY” project, aimed at teaching road safety and promoting cycling among kids. I would like to thank the Administration of the Municipality of Taino and especially the Mayor Stefano Ghiringhelli. We have worked together for two years now and our collaboration will be intensified in 2017. I am grateful to all the Municipalities involved in the race, to the numerous Local Clubs, to the sponsors who support the event, and to the police, who guarantee the safety of athletes and public alike. A special thanks goes to the civil, military, sporting, political, social and cultural Institutions that flank us and give us moral and real support. Greetings also the media, especially RAI that will broadcast the race already on Sunday evening”. (Photo Flaviano Ossola)

On Sunday 19 March, the “Trofeo Alfredo Binda” from Taino to Cittiglio

There is a race within the race at the Trofeo Alfredo Binda this year and it is almost as gripping as the race itself, which is considered ever more the “spring world championships”, thanks to the participation of some of the world’s best riders. The region becomes more involved every year, showing its enthusiasm and passion for the queens of the road during the world tour, one of the most important races in the world. The Trofeo Alfredo Binda, which will take place on Sunday 19 March, organised by Mario Minervino’s Cycling Sport Promotion, will match the athletes’ efforts with prizes to compete for right from the starting line in Taino. This is thanks to the local municipalities involved in the first part of the race route: Osmate, Besozzo, Brebbia, Cuveglio and Grantola, which have set aside prizes for the winners of various intermediate sprints. From Grantola on, the strongest riders will begin their race in earnest on the climbs; in fact prizes will be given to the first cyclist to climb the Cunardo, after 39 km, then at Orino during each of the four laps of Cittiglio, Brenta, Casalzuigno, Casale, Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Cuvio, Comacchio, Orino, Azzio, Gemonio and back to Cittiglio.

Then it’s on to the finish line and the most important prize; the victory of the nineteenth edition of the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, a victory that can make a career: “It’s true, winning here is particularly significant – explains Mario Minervino – for example Elisa Longo Borghini’s first important victory was here in Cittiglio and that success really changed her sporting career. But the race within the race organised by the municipalities along the route is just as important. They are getting more and more involved in the race that brings an important economic return to the Province of Varese at this time of year. The Municipalities, the Chamber of Commerce, the Province of Varese, the Lombardy Region, the Verbano Valley Mountains and Valleys Community, together with the sponsors create the best conditions possible for the athletes to compete. There is one week to go to the event but already from Monday, our territory will begin to sport the colours of the jerseys of the protagonists of the Trofeo Binda and Trofeo Da Moreno“.

To add to the appeal of the Trofeo Binda, there will also be a special prize; the winner of the race will win a week long holiday at the Happy Village Marina di Camerota on the Cilento coast, which is twinned with Cittiglio and has always shown its enthusiasm for the Trofeo Binda. The stay at the Happy Village (www.happyvillage.it) will allow the fortunate cyclists to get to know one of the most beautiful seaside locations in Italy. The Happy Village Marina di Camerota offers 257 Mediterranean style mini homes located from 200 to 600 m from the sea, with direct access to the sand and pebble beaches which are reserved and serviced for guests. Cyclists from fifty teams from all over the world will take part in the two races and all of the best athletes have announced their participation. (Photo Flaviano Ossola)
