We will have the satisfaction of being the first organisers to prepare the stage for President Brian Cookson to award the caps to the leaders of the “Junior Women’s Nation’s Cup”.

One hundred and thirty-one, representing 21 teams, are registered to participate in the Da Moreno – mini-Binda Trophy. More than 140 athletes, representing 21 teams, are registered to participate in the fourth edition of the “Da Moreno – mini-Alfredo Binda Trophy”, including five foreign national teams (France, Switzerland, Lithuania, Austria and Slovenia), one mixed foreign team and 15 Italian teams. Teams come from the following countries: Italy, France, Switzerland, Lithuania, Austria, Slovenia, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Great Britain and Russia.

Among the favourites: from beyond the Alps, Juliette Labous, second place in the 2015 edition of the “Da Moreno-mini Binda Trophy”, national time trial champion, fifth place in the World and European Championship time trials and fourth in the European Road Championships in Tartu; Maelle Grossetete, fourth place in the “Da Moreno Trophy 2015”, vice-champion in the time trials and protagonist at the World and European Championships; Pauline Clouard, sixth place last year in Cittiglio and seventh at the “Chrono des Nations” and Lucie Jounier, at the foot of the podium at the “Chrono des Nations“, Swiss rider, Lena Mettraux, who defended her national flag at the World Championships in Richmond, Belgian Nathalie Bex, fifteenth in the time trials at the European Championships and protagonist in Richmond, Dutch athlete Kylie Waterreus, twentieth in the continental trial in Tartu, Lithuanian Erika Kuodyte, third in the 2015 national championships, the mighty Dane Susanne Andersen, fifth in the Richmond World Championships and sixth in the individual time trials at the European Championships in Tartu, British rider Henrietta Colborne, second in the “Chrono des Nations 2015”, Slovenian Hajdi Zajc, current national vice-champion and Russian Kristina Stolbova (Team Zhiraf ASD), daughter of ex-professional cyclist Svetlana Bubnenkova, winner of the “Alfredo Binda Trophy – Cittiglio” in 2002 who dominated the “Giro d’Italia 2002”, twice winning the rainbow jersey.

She lives right at the finish line of the competition organised by Cycling Sport Promotion and its leader Mario Minervino. In 2015 she achieved one victory, 2 seconds, a fourth and 2 fifth places.

In 2013, Lithuanian cyclist, Milda Jankauskaite, was first to cross the finish line in Cittiglio (Varese), imitated the following year by Amalie Dideriksen from Denmark, who was wearing the World Champion’s jersey, which she won again 6 months later on the roads of Ponferrada in Spain. Last season, though, there was an Italian triumph with Venetian rider Sofia Bertizzolo, European Champion and future vice-champion of the world, right behind Dideriksen. But that’s not all. There is still more good news for our many fans. Just a few more days until the announcement. (Photo Flaviano Ossola)

The Binda Trophy week begins and Cittiglio, Gavirate and the whole Valcuvia region are finalising the preparations for the double event on Sunday; the Alfredo Binda Trophy for elite women and the Da Moreno Trophy for junior women; two events that can hold their own with any other race in the world: “We are putting the finishing touches on all aspects of the race – explained Mario Minervino, leader of Cycling Sport Promotion which organises the two races – we have already installed a large part of the communication that distinguishes the events: the roundabouts, the billboard at the Colacem factory, we are about to put up the flags and the posters that announce Sunday’s races all over the region. We will soon start to set up the stage and the structures for the start and finish lines. Then it will be the turn of the arches and all the rest. The weather should be good all week and this will make our work easier; after the recent snows, we can breathe a sigh of relief. Now we are just waiting for the athletes, their staff and the fans, on Sunday, for whom we have prepared a full programme of entertainment”. Those who arrive in Cittiglio on Friday will already find fun; lots of music, entertainment and good food right up until Sunday afternoon. Don’t miss out! (Photo F.Ossola)

Today, Thursday 10 March, the advertising campaign to promote the Alfredo Binda Trophy (female World Tour event) and the Da Moreno Trophy – mini-Alfredo Binda (international event for junior women) will begin on Radio Number One. Both races will take place on Sunday 20 March, starting from Gavirate and finishing in Cittiglio after 123 km. “Huge enthusiasm for a special day dedicated to elite female cycling. Come and see cycling at its best on the roads of Lombardy!” goes the ad which will be aired seven times a day between 7.00 am and 8.00 pm. Radio Number One, official radio of the Alfredo Binda Trophy for years, is the ideal partner for an event that attracts tens of thousands of people both at the start line and along the race circuit. The “Alfredo Binda Trophy” lengthens the tourist season, ‘sold out’ in the whole southern Varese region

The “Alfredo Binda Trophy” lengthens the tourist season, ‘sold out’ in the whole southern Varese region

The numbers are astounding: all of the hospitality structures in the Varese area are booked out on the third weekend of March during the 18th Alfredo Binda Trophy – Cittiglio, one of the races of the elite female world tour and the 4th edition of the Da Moreno/mini-Binda Trophy, an international event for junior women, both of which will be held on Sunday 20 March, starting from Gavirate and finishing in Cittiglio (both in the province of Varese). “This year 140 athletes have registered for the junior race while 170 will participate in the elite event. They are from thirty different countries. – explained Mario Minervino, president of Cycling Sport Promotion, which organises the event – Add to that the various technicians, managers and masseurs of the teams, coming, as usual, from all over the world. Then, the journalists, photographers and all the operators involved in the race. We have an estimated 1,200 people staying in the area. Hotels and farm accommodation in the southern Varese region are all full: it is great news to be “sold out” and not just because of the passion and interest that the event brings out in cycling lovers. To have such an important influx at this time of year is positive for the economy of the whole area. In fact, the Binda Trophy has lengthened the season for all those working in the tourism sector and we are very proud of this. We’ll see the first team cars arriving already on Thursday 17 March”. We will be able to show President Cookson first hand all the initiatives undertaken by the territory to make this date in the Varese province more prestigious. We will have the opportunity to talk about the Under 23 Nations’ Cup to be held at the end of July and about another surprise that we will reveal in the next few days as we are waiting for it to be made official. I would like to thank the President of the Italian Cycling Federation, Renato Di Rocco, for his assistance in bringing President Cookson to Cittiglio; it’s good to know that the work we carry out during the year is appreciated in Rome”.

“Alfredo Binda Trophy Women’s World Tour”, greetings from Fabrizio Anzani, Mayor of Cittiglio

“Alfredo Binda Trophy Women’s World Tour”, greetings from Fabrizio Anzani, Mayor of Cittiglio

With the month of March, the women’s cycling season gets off to an exciting start. On Sunday 20 March, the 18th edition of the Alfredo Binda Trophy for elite women and the 4th° Da Moreno Trophy, an international event for junior women, will take place between Gavirate and Cittiglio (both in the province of Varese). Both dates stand out in the world calendar which, this year, includes the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the World Championships in Qatar in late October.

The Alfredo Binda Trophy will cover a 123 km route, starting from Gavirate at 13.30. After a 5 km ride towards Bardello, the route returns to Gavirate, then continues on to Cocquio Trevisago, Gemonio and Cittiglio where a long 38 km lap will begin, passing through Brenta Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Rancio Valcuvia, Cassano Valcuvia, Mesenzana, Grantola, Cunardo, Bedero Valcuvia, Brinzio, Castello Cabaglio, Orino, Azzio, Gemonio, Cittiglio. This will be followed by four laps of Brenta, Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Cuvio, Orino, Gemonio, with the race finishing in Cittiglio. Tough points will include the Grantola climb in the first 30 km, the climb to Casale di Casalzuigno, which returns as a feature of the Alfredo Binda Trophy route, then the Orino ascent, 10 km from the finish line, which is included in the final four laps.

The Da Moreno Trophy will take place on Sunday 20 March, starting from Gavirate at 9.15 and finishing in Cittiglio after 66 km. Once the athletes reach Cittiglio, they will repeat the circuit from Brenta to Casalzuigno and Cittiglio five times, followed by the final 17 km through Brenta, Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Cuvio, Orino, Azzio, Gemonio and Cittiglio.

Cycling Sport Promotion, the group responsible for organising the event, has received many manifestations of esteem and appreciation over the last few weeks, the most recent from Fabrizio Anzani, Mayor of Cittiglio: “As always, I would like to extend my personal warm greetings and those of the Administration to the 18th Alfredo Binda Trophy – Cittiglio Municipality, the unmissable annual date with top level elite women’s cycling that takes place on our roads which are known to a large cycling audience, and not only, thanks also to the memory of our great champion Alfredo Binda. I would like to thank the tireless Cycling Sport Promotion group, led by Mario Minervino, who have been working for months to ensure that we enjoy the show that the race usual offers. Cittiglio has become an important point of reference for world female cycling, a real font of concrete initiatives that are ever more appreciated at international level. The Cittiglio race is not only important for the athletes, the organisers and more recently for the “media”, but above all for the spectators and fans who get to enjoy a unique, top level competition.

I cannot neglect to welcome the 4th Da Moreno Trophy which will give visibility to the young athletes who will test themselves against a less difficult route than that of the elite riders, but which will certainly be compelling and stimulating in bringing out the strengths of new, young champions. Arrivederci on 20 March!” (Photo F.Ossola)
