All the athletes will be pitting themselves against World Champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot who has chosen Cittiglio for her seasonal debut. The event which is much anticipated by enthusiasts and fans has finally arrived: on Sunday 29 March the 17th Alfredo Binda Trophy – Women’s World Cup will take place. The event is organised by Cycling Sport Promotion and its president, Mario Minervino: “Yes, here we are again – said Minervino – everything is ready both in Cittiglio and Laveno Mombello and the whole Valcuvia area is looking forward to the race which, as always, brings the best teams in the world to the Varese province”. Indeed, 144 athletes are registered to participate, representing 24 teams, including five national teams: France, Poland, Russia, Switzerland and USA. Among them all, perhaps the athlete who stands out most is French rider and World road and cyclo-cross champion, Pauline Ferrand Prevot, who has chosen the Alfredo Binda Trophy as her seasonal debut. So everybody is curious to see the young French woman at work. She came fifth in Cittiglio in 2014, before going on to become the best athlete of the season.
The race begins at 13.30 in Laveno Mombello (Varese) and finishes after 16.00 in Cittiglio (Varese). From Laveno Mombello the group will pass through Reno and Arolo di Leggiuno, then on to Monvalle, Leggiuno, Sangiano, Caravate, Gemonio and Cittiglio where a 38 km circuit will begin, taking in Brenta Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Rancio Valcuvia, Cassano Valcuvia, Mesenzana, Grantola, Cunardo, Bedero Valcuvia, Brinzio, Castello Cabaglio, Orino, Azzio, Gemonio and Cittiglio. The final 68 km of the race will circle four times around Brenta, Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Cuvio, Comacchio, Orino, the race peak, at 450 m above sea level, Azzio and Gemonio with the finish in Cittiglio after 123 km: “Both the athletes and fans like the route – commented the president, Minervino – at the Binda Trophy, the best athletes always come to the fore. This year the athlete to beat is the World Champion and favourite to win, Ferrand Prevot. It will not be an easy victory, there are lots of fierce adversaries, not least some of the Italian athletes. It will be very interesting to see how it ends and especially to see whether the Orino climb will decide the outcome or if the winner will only be selected in the final sprint. In any case, it promises to be a great show.” A show which thousands of spectators will watch, along the route, and at the start and finish lines. Those who cannot follow the race live will be able to watch it on RaiSport 2 on Sunday evening from 21.00 to 22.30, with commentary by Piergiorgio Severini and Gigi Sgarbozza.
