On Sunday 29 March, the 3rd Da Moreno Trophy – or “Mini-Binda” – for junior women cyclists will take place. This year, for the first time, this will be an international event, something which can be boasted only by the Olympics and the World and Continental Championships. The race is organised by Cycling Sport Promotion and is known among junior cyclists as the “Mini-World Cup”. At the moment, 20 teams have registered to participate, including national teams from Switzerland, France and Lithuania, two foreign club teams and two mixed foreign teams (Mangertseder – WTB; DeRosa Women Team; Team Rygter; TKK Pacific Torun; BTC City Ljubljana; Pro Cycle Team Bregenz). Thirteen Italian teams have also registered for a total of 131 athletes, 43 of whom are foreign.

The race will start in Laveno Mombello (Varese) at 9.15 and will finish soon after 11.00 in Cittiglio (Varese). From Laveno Mombello the group will pass through Reno and Arolo di Leggiuno, then on to Monvalle, Sangiano, Caravate, Gemonio and Cittiglio, the start of a 6 km circuit through Brenta Casalzuigno and Cittiglio which will be repeated five times. The last 17 km of the race include the towns of Brenta, Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Cuvio, Comacchio, Orino, the highest peak of the race, at 450 m above sea level, then on to Azzio and Gemonio with arrival in Cittiglio after 69 km: “Three years ago we started organising the junior race almost for fun – explained Mario Minervino, president of Cycling Sport Promotion – but then lots of foreign teams wanted to participate so we proposed creating an international event to the International Cycling Union (UCI). It’s a huge success because the young cyclists have the chance to share with their elite counterparts the enthusiasm of the Varese province for the World Cup”.
